Teaching Printmaking Classes and Workshops for Over 10 Years
Thanks for dropping by to check out my website Magenta Sky! My name is Susan Yeates and if you don’t know already, I am a printmaking tutor and self-published author of art/craft related books. (See very old image from 10 years ago to the left!!)
I started Magenta Sky in 2003 whilst still a struggling art student (printmaker) trying to find ways to work on a very low budget and with minimal space. I decided to teach others the skills and knowledge I learnt whilst at University studying Fine Art (Printmaking) and ran numerous workshops and classes around where I lived. I very soon discovered that I loved teaching and helping others to get creative. Therefore Magenta Sky has blossomed from these humble beginnings and continued to grow over the past 13 years!
In 2010 I decided to write a book on printmaking called Learning Linocut, which brought together all the years of teaching and studying this technique into one place. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to linocut and as well as answering all the regular questions that students ask, showcases professional and amateur work and teaches the exact techniques that I teach in classes. I actually wrote the first draft of the book in just two weeks over the Christmas of 2010 and it was then self-published in May 2011. I just got it done as my time was very limited and I worked full-time running my own business.
I was also super-excited to discover that it sold well both in the UK and the US and became an Amazon no. 1 best seller. Not bad for two weeks’ work (and then six months of proofing and editing!!) Even today I find people turning up to workshops with the book in hand saying that they have been reading it already or want me to sign it.
Printmaking Courses and Workshops
At Magenta Sky we continue to teach a range of printmaking workshops aimed at beginners to print as well as those that have a little more experience. I always aim to teach techniques that can be practiced at home without the need for a printmaking press and wish to make printmaking very accessible for people who perhaps haven’t done anything creative in a while or are returning to art after a break from it.
All our workshops begin with an introduction to what is to be covered, a detailed explanation of the technique, a discussion of example works and then we crack on with the creative bit! Ideally we spend the majority of the time exploring and practicing a technique with myself chipping in and giving individual help and feedback where required and wanted. The great thing about a group workshop is the ability to see other students working as well and the sheer volume and level of work created sometimes in just a few hours always astounds me! Check out the feedback from some of our workshops here.
Online ‘Introduction to Printmaking’ Course
I wrote the distance learning course ‘Introduction to Printmaking’ in 2007. It was initially delivered as a course where we sent a hard copy folder out to students and only those in the UK could join. In 2015, after surveying a number of existing and potential students we found a real demand for tuition videos to accompany the course and for students overseas to join in the fun!
We therefore needed a better way to deliver the course… and so our online learning portal was born! A mixture of the traditional and the new – instant access to the course manual as downloadable PDFs (with all the same step-by-step guides as before) but NEW added instructional videos to really bring this practical art to life! (plus we have added a new module too!)
More Online Courses and a Sketchbook Challenge
As Magenta Sky has developed and grown (and my understanding of technology has improved) I have moved into more and more online courses and embraced the power of social media. in 2017 and 2018 I created a number of shorter online courses in printmaking that introduce individual subjects. These courses can be found here: http://www.magenta-sky.com/online-courses/
on 01 January 2018 I also began a brand new challenge that saw lots of new people getting creating and picking up a sketchbook and pencil for the first time. The 30 Day Sketchbook Challenge 2018 was the first step for me into creating a free email challenge to get people sketching. I had over 1500 people sign up for the 30 days and sharing their work in a Facebook group on a daily basis. It was a friendly, creative month of fun… and I can’t wait to get started again in 2019!

“I set up Magenta Sky in 2003, just after I left university as a part-time venture. It began as a way of selling my crafts and also teaching printmaking courses and workshops in various venues (including Farnham Maltings, The Electric Theatre and Salisbury Arts Centre).
Since then I have expanded to teach more classes including a unique online printmaking course ‘Introduction to Printmaking’ and become an arts author, self-publishing colour art books. I now have a small range of art and craft books available to buy in printmaking (Learning Linocut), crochet (Amigurumi Animals) and Christmas crafts (Make Your Own Christmas Tree Decorations). I have a new book on Printmaking due for publishing in November 2018 – A Beginners Guide to Linocut, with the wonderful Arts and Crafts publisher – Search Press. All three books can be found on this website www.magenta-sky.com or on www.amazon.co.uk
I love teaching creative topics and have found Magenta Sky to be a pleasure over the 13 years that I have been running it. I look forward to seeing you on a course soon!”
