Last Thursday at stupid-o-clock in the morning, I found myself driving all the way from Surrey to the beautiful New Forest down in Hampshire. Now, as much as I would have loved this to be a holiday, I was in fact taking my car (loaded with printmaking materials) off for a one-off classes4u workshop.
A lovely lady who had initially heard of Magenta Sky by purchasing the ‘Learning Linocut’ book, had booked me in to run a private printmaking workshop in her home for her and 5 friends. It was in fact a birthday celebration and a way of spending time with her friends and collectively enjoying a creative day together.
The topic we chose for the workshop was ‘repeat pattern’ as an introduction to linocut. She chose this subject from a collection of available workshops listed on our clsses4u information sheet and together we discussed the length of time the course would run for and start times to find the perfect balance for her and her friends.
Firstly, just driving down into Hampshire and across the New Forest (overtaking ponies and cows on the way) was a treat, but to be welcomed into someone’s home to teach a subject that I thoroughly enjoy was a pleasure. Some ladies had never done any printmaking before, so were picking up linocutters and creating a print for the very first time. And what great work they did in just a short four hour session.
We had small sampler linocuts, colour (multiple block) prints and sheets of hand-printed wrapping paper all finished and drying by the end of the day. People really found the creative side that they never knew they had and it was a great way for the lady I ran the workshop for to share her interest in print with her friends.
